Back in the 1990s, VAG introduced a 1.9-litre diesel engine with the ABL code name. It is a four-cylinder motor with an inline layout. It has an indirect injection system and was found in Transporter (T4), with some prominence in other commercial VAG vehicles.
The primary pros of the ABL are its simplicity, economy and long lifespan, where such qualities are highly appreciated. It only develops 50 kW and 130 Nm of power but is reliable and low-maintenance.
This engine runs on a high compression ratio of 22.5:1 and has a SOHC layout with 8 valves.
Mechanics and experts list timing belt wear and fuel injector problems as the two main issues with VAG ABL motors.
