About the BKP Engine – Specs & Technical Data

If you drive a VAG car from the mid to late 2000s, you may know the BKP motor. It’s a 2.0 TDI (turbocharged diesel) engine from VAG. This is a four-cylinder inline unit with a single turbo, hailing from the EA189 engine family. You can find it in cars like the VW Passat, and a few more from the VAG lineup.

From an engineering standpoint, this motor features DOHC, 16 valves and CRDI injection technology which is very common in VAG motors. There is also a variable geometry turbo (VGT), helping produce 103 kW of power at 4,000 RPM and 320 Nm of torque.

Despite its popularity, the BKP engine has documented struggles with injector failure, DPF clogging and turbo issues. Buying a used engine in good condition is sometimes the most financially viable option.
