Many BMW owners and drivers know the N47 engine family. This particular motor, the N47C20A, is a 2.0-litre turbocharged inline-four diesel that was first introduced in 2007. The engine is most commonly fitted to 20d cars from BMW and Mini Coopers. The list of latter models include the Cooper One 2.0D, Clubman 2.0SD and Mini Cooper S 2.0SD as well as a few more.
The pros of the N47C20A include decent fuel economy and torquey pull from the low end, making it a popular choice among drivers looking for a fuel-efficient but dynamic BMW.
From a tech standpoint, this motor develops 105 kW at 4,000 RPM and 350 Nm of torque between 1,750 and 3,000 RPM. Chip tuning is also standard to bump up power and torque figures. A high compression ratio (16.5:1) allows efficient fuel combustion, making highway and mixed driving economical.
Despite its popularity, the engine has had a reputation for timing chain issues, which lead to costly repairs if not maintained. Other than that, it’s considered one of the more reliable engine choices from the N47 range.
