When replacing the engine, it is essential to install a new oil cooler. The reason is that the oil system of the old engine may contain metal particles, sludge, or other contaminants. These impurities often accumulate inside the oil cooler, and it is almost impossible to clean it completely.

If the old oil cooler is reused, the contaminants can flow into the replacement engine together with the oil, causing serious damage and leading to engine failure. To prevent this risk and to ensure proper warranty coverage, the oil cooler must always be replaced with a new one.

Why Is It Important To Check Oil Pressure Before Starting A Replaced Engine?

When an engine is shipped, stored, or replaced, the internal oil passages, bearings, and moving parts are empty or contain only residual oil. If the engine is started immediately without first priming the oil system, these components operate for several seconds without proper lubrication.

What can happen if this step is skipped:

  • Severe wear on bearings and camshafts: Metal parts make direct contact without an oil film, causing immediate friction and damage.
  • Turbocharger damage (if equipped): Turbos rotate at very high speeds and rely on instant oil pressure; lack of lubrication can seize or destroy them within seconds.
  • Scoring and overheating of pistons/cylinders: Without oil, heat and friction rapidly increase, which can lead to permanent scoring or engine seizure.
  • Void of warranty: Because the damage is due to incorrect installation rather than a defect, warranty coverage does not apply.

In short: Building oil pressure before the first startup ensures that every moving part of the engine is properly lubricated, preventing “dry start” damage. This step is critical to the longevity of the engine and is a mandatory requirement for warranty coverage.
